Curaçao
Curaçao (Papiaments: Kòrsou) is een eiland in de zuidelijke Caraïbische Zee, voor de kust van Venezuela en is een land binnen het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden. De hoofdstad en grootste plaats op het eiland is Willemstad.
Een groot deel van Willemstad staat op de werelderfgoedlijst. De Koningin Emmabrug (bijnaam swinging old lady of Pontjesbrug) is een kenmerkende pontonbrug in het centrum van Willemstad op Curaçao en is gebouwd in 1888. De brug is 168 meter lang en de enige drijvende houten draaibrug ter wereld. De brug drijft op zestien pontons op de Sint Annabaai en verbindt Punda met Otrobanda, de twee delen van de historische binnenstad.
Het eiland staat bekend om zijn mooie stranden. In totaal heeft Curaçao 37 stranden, de meeste liggen aan de zuidkant van het eiland.
Ook heeft het eiland een aantal beschermde natuurgebieden, vooral aan de noord- en westkant van het eiland. Christoffelpark is een nationaal park en natuurgebied in het noordwesten van het eiland Curaçao (Bandabou). Centraal ligt de Sint-Christoffelberg, die met 377 meter het hoogste punt van Curaçao vormt. De naam van berg en park verwijzen naar de ontdekkingsreiziger Christoffel Columbus. De flora in het Christoffelpark is als gevolg van de hogere ligging en sterkere regenval gevarieerder dan elders op Curaçao. Het park biedt een gevarieerd landschap waar 21 van de 22 soorten plantengemeenschappen op het eiland voorkomen en 67% van de plantsoorten van het eiland.
Het nationale park Shete Boka ('zeven inhammen of baaien') is een natuurgebied in Bandabou, Curaçao. Het park is opgericht in 1994, en beslaat ca. 200 hectare. Het gebied beslaat meer dan 10 kilometer van de ruige noordkust van het eiland. Er zijn een tiental baaien en inhammen.
Hato is het ruige gebied aan de noordkust van Curacao waar doornstruiken en cactussen het voor het zeggen hebben. In deze buurt vindt men de Grotten van Hato, een van de toeristische trekpleisers van Curaçao. De grotten zouden al rond het jaar 500 bewoond zijn geweest door de Arawakindianen, de oorspronkelijke bevolking van Curaçao. In de slaventijd werden de grotten gebruikt door gevluchte slaven.
De voormalige zoutpannen in de St. Marie baai op Curacao zijn nu vaak het thuis van flamingo's.
Curacao
Curaçao (Papiamento: Kòrsou) is an island in the southern Caribbean Sea, off the coast of Venezuela and is a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The capital and largest city on the island is Willemstad.
Much of Willemstad is on the World Heritage List. The Queen Emma Bridge (nickname swinging old lady or Pontjesbrug) is a characteristic pontoon bridge in the center of Willemstad on Curaçao and was built in 1888. The bridge is 168 meters long and the only floating wooden swing bridge in the world. The bridge floats on sixteen pontoons on the Sint Anna Bay and connects Punda with Otrobanda, the two parts of the historic city center.
The island is known for its beautiful beaches. Curaçao has a total of 37 beaches, most of which are on the south side of the island.
The island also has a number of protected nature reserves, especially on the north and west side of the island. Christoffelpark is a national park and nature reserve in the northwest of the island of Curacao (Bandabou). The Sint-Christoffelberg is centrally located, which at 377 meters is the highest point of Curaçao. The name of the mountain and park refers to the explorer Christopher Columbus. The flora in the Christoffelpark is more varied than elsewhere on Curaçao as a result of the higher location and stronger rainfall. The park offers a varied landscape where 21 of the 22 species of plant communities on the island occur and 67% of the plant species of the island.
The national park Shete Boka ('seven coves or bays') is a nature reserve in Bandabou, Curaçao. The park was established in 1994 and covers approximately 200 hectares. The area covers more than 10 kilometers of the island's rugged north coast. There are a dozen bays and coves.
Hato is the rugged area on the north coast of Curacao where thorn bushes and cacti are in charge. In this area you will find the Caves of Hato, one of the tourist attractions of Curaçao. The caves would have been inhabited by the Arawakindians, the original population of Curaçao, around the year 500. In slavery times, the caves were used by runaway slaves.
The former salt pans in the St. Marie bay on Curacao are now often home to flamingos.
